The Flora above Stoney Creek
The Flora River is a spring-fed river south-west of Katherine, clear and flowing through the dry season over tufa bars and pools lined with pandanus, much of it inside the Flora River Nature Park; the gauge sits above its junction with Stoney Creek. Species and seasons
Barramundi hold in the deeper pools of the Flora, and sooty grunter are the everyday fish of the runs, on small lures. The Northern Territory has no general closed season for barramundi; the possession and size limits apply, and the nature park has its own rules.
Where to fish it
The nature park’s camping area and access points give access to the river in the dry season. Freshwater and, at times, estuarine crocodiles are present: take care near the water.
Planning a visit
Katherine is the nearest town with supplies; the park is reached on unsealed roads in the dry season. Carry water and fuel.
The river through the year
The Flora is fed by springs, which keep it running clear through the dry season when most rivers of the Katherine region stop, and the calcium-rich water builds the tufa bars and small cascades the river is known for. Through the wet, roughly November to April, rain swells it and the park roads can close; the run-off after the rains is when the barramundi move. Through the dry, from about May to October, the flow is steady and the pools clear, and sooty grunter feed in the runs over the tufa. The river continues north-west to join the Katherine and form the Daly, whose upper reach at Dorisvale has its own page.
