The reach
The Victoria at the Victoria Highway crossing is the big river of the western Territory where the highway to Kununurra crosses it, wide and slow between the sandstone escarpments of the Judbarra ranges, with the Victoria River Roadhouse, the bridge, the boat ramp and the gorge reaches upstream toward the Gregory park and downstream toward Timber Creek and the tidal river. It is barramundi water of the wild kind, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at the highway supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Barramundi fish the rock bars, the snags and the deep pools through the dry and on the run-off, with no closed season in the Territory and the possession limit the constraint; sooty grunter are on the rock; black jew and threadfin are in the tidal river downstream; catfish and archer fish are everywhere; and saltwater crocodiles are in every reach, with the signs at the ramp. The river floods the highway in a big wet.
Where to fish it
The ramp at the crossing launches onto the river, and the fishing is a boat fishery of the rock bars and the pools upstream into the gorge and downstream toward the Big Horse Creek camp at Timber Creek; the roadhouse is the base and the escarpment walks are the day’s other reason. Bank fishing means staying well back from the water.
