The Victoria at Dashwood Crossing
Dashwood Crossing is on the upper Victoria River, far inland in the Victoria River District’s cattle country, south of the highway crossing at Victoria River roadhouse, where the Territory’s longest river runs as a chain of pools and sandy runs through the dry. Species and seasons
Sooty grunter are the fish of the upper Victoria’s pools, on small lures, and barramundi reach the upper river in the wet; catfish are common. The Northern Territory has no general closed season for barramundi; the possession limits apply.
Where to fish it
The crossing is the access point; the surrounding country is pastoral lease, and access beyond the public road needs the station’s permission. Crocodiles can be present in the Victoria: take care near the water.
Planning a visit
Dashwood Crossing is remote, reached on unsealed roads that close in the wet; the Victoria River roadhouse on the Victoria Highway and Kalkarindji are the nearest stops. Carry water, fuel and a way to call for help.
The river through the year
The upper Victoria is a river of the seasons: through the wet, roughly November to April, it floods and cuts the roads, and through the dry it shrinks to long pools joined by runs, sometimes barely flowing by the end of the year. The sooty grunter live in the pools all year, and the barramundi that reach this far up come in the wet. The dry season is the only time to reach Dashwood Crossing.
