The native sportfish of the east-coast rivers and the stocked dams. Surface lures in summer, deep in winter, and a river closed season for spawning. Dam fish school deep; vertical jig plastics and blades over them. Rivers slow, and closed in NSW from June.
Golden perch
Best: November to April
Yellowbelly. The bread-and-butter native of the Murray-Darling lakes and rivers; loves warm water, structure and a lure worked slowly past its nose. Slower. Work the deeper timber and the drop-offs with vibes and bait.

The lake
Lake Boondooma holds the Boyne and Stuart rivers north-west of Proston in the South Burnett, a large impoundment in cattle and timber country with a holiday park, camping, ramps and long arms up both rivers, and one of the best-known bass and golden perch fisheries in the state, host of a long-running fishing classic. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at the dam supplies the level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Australian bass are the fishery, schooled in the deep water off the points and the old river channel in winter and spring, found with a sounder and worked with plastics, blades and ice jigs, and spread along the edges in summer; golden perch are stocked in numbers and fish the timber and the points from spring to autumn; silver perch and saratoga are present; and red claw are a pot fishery. The stocking group publishes its releases. Barramundi are not the fishery here.
Where to fish it
The holiday park and the ramps at the dam launch onto the main basin, and the Boyne and Stuart arms run back into the timber where the perch hold; the points and the old channel off the wall are where the winter bass school, and the fishing classic is won on them. Bank fishing from the park foreshore works at dusk, and the lake is big enough to need a plan in a wind.
Reading the report
The South Burnett is hot in summer and cool in winter and the water temperature estimate, labelled as one, moves the bass between the deep schools and the edges; the chart shows the irrigation draw-down.
