The lake
Callide Dam sits on Callide Creek east of Biloela in central Queensland, an impoundment that supplies the Callide power station and receives its warm cooling water back, which keeps the lake warmer than any other in the district through winter; it has a caravan park, a ramp and picnic areas at the wall and open, grazing shores. It is barramundi water that fishes when the others have shut down, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at the dam wall supplies the level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Barramundi are stocked and are the fishery, along the weed edges, the timber and the warm-water outlet through the year, with winter fishing that the other dams cannot offer because of the power station’s outflow; Callide is on the Queensland Government’s exempt list, so the closure does not apply and the species card shows open all year with the rule linked. Saratoga, sooty grunter and golden perch are stocked, red claw are a pot fishery, and the stocking group publishes its releases.
Where to fish it
The caravan park and the ramp at the wall are the access, and the warm-water outlet from the power station is the winter spot, with the weed edges and the timber in the arms the warm-month water; the lake trolls well along the drop-offs. Bank fishing from the park foreshore works at dusk and the outlet area has its own exclusion zone marked by the operator.
