Here are the Queensland storages published by the Bureau of Meteorology, from Seqwater’s South East Queensland dams to Sunwater’s regional irrigation schemes and council town supplies. For each dam you see how many megalitres it holds, how full it is, its water level and how far it has moved in a week, with a link to our fishing page wherever the dam is open to anglers.
Percentage full is the Bureau’s accessible volume divided by the accessible capacity, as on its storage dashboard, so it can differ by a point or two from the operator’s daily report, which is the official figure. Year ago is the same storage on the same date last year. Dams with a fishing page link to it.

Seqwater’s dams supply South East Queensland, and twelve of them form the SEQ Water Grid: Wivenhoe, Somerset, North Pine, Hinze, Baroon Pocket, Leslie Harrison, Ewen Maddock, Cooloolabin, Sideling Creek, Lake Macdonald, Little Nerang and Wappa. Sunwater runs the irrigation dams and weirs of regional Queensland, which its storage level reports group by water supply scheme, from Mareeba–Dimbulah and the Burdekin to the Border Rivers and Upper Condamine. Toowoomba Regional Council, Townsville City Council, Rockhampton Regional Council, Cairns Regional Council and the Gladstone Area Water Board send figures for their own town storages. The Bureau collects all of them, and the table on this page reads the Bureau’s version.
The Bureau and Seqwater calculate accessible volume on the same basis, so for South East Queensland the two should differ only through calculation accuracy. Sunwater reports against total storage capacity, dead storage included, while the Bureau uses accessible capacity, so volume and per cent full will not match for Sunwater dams. At EJ Beardmore Dam and Jack Taylor Weir, where the dead storage is perched, the Bureau counts only the part below the minimum supply level. Townsville City Council, Rockhampton’s Fitzroy River Water and the Gladstone Area Water Board also publish volumes that include dead storage. None of these numbers is wrong; the operator’s figure describes its own system, and the Bureau’s is designed for comparing storages side by side.
Wivenhoe and Somerset hold floodwater as well as drinking water. Seqwater gives Wivenhoe a full supply volume of 1,165,240 megalitres within a total capacity of 3.132 million megalitres, and lists flood storage volumes of 2,203,000 megalitres at Wivenhoe and 705,000 at Somerset. Its table notes that full supply capacity leaves out the flood compartments, so a reading above 100 per cent at either dam means water is being held in flood storage. Since January 2016, under the Somerset Dam Improvement Project, the full supply levels have been temporarily lowered to about 90 per cent at Wivenhoe and about 80 per cent at Somerset, and Seqwater begins flood releases if rain lifts either dam above those amended levels. At these two dams a reading near 90 or 80 per cent is the working ceiling, not a shortfall.
Seqwater separates gated dams, where it controls releases through gates such as Wivenhoe’s five radial gates, from ungated dams that spill on their own once full. Its dam levels table flags a dam that is spilling, and on an ungated storage a figure just over 100 per cent usually means water is running over the spillway. The dam release update page and the free Dam Release Notification Service, by email, SMS or recorded landline message, report releases and spills as they occur. Seqwater also points out that its dam levels come from automated data that has not been verified and are updated through the day, one more reason its number and the Bureau’s daily figure can differ.
Queensland manages dam fishing through the Stocked Impoundment Permit Scheme. Anyone aged 18 or over line fishing in a scheme dam or weir needs a permit: A$13.60 for a week, A$64.58 for a year, or A$46.45 a year for holders of eligible concession cards. One permit covers every impoundment in the scheme, and the government lists more than 60 stocked dams and weirs, from Seqwater lakes such as Wivenhoe, Somerset, North Pine and Hinze to Sunwater dams such as Burdekin Falls, Fairbairn and Tinaroo Falls. Sunwater says all its dams except Kroombit are stocked for recreational fishing, allows boating on all except EJ Beardmore and Kroombit, and bans fishing on or near dam walls and inside marked exclusion zones. For Seqwater lakes, each dam’s page sets out where fishing, paddling and powered boating are allowed.
When a dam falls well below full supply, ramps built for the normal shoreline can end short of the water, so trailer-boat anglers should check the operator before driving out. Seqwater’s recreation and safety notices list closures and changes across its lakes, including ramp access at Lake Macdonald, and Sunwater posts closures, algae warnings and boil water alerts under its Recreation & Safety Alerts. After heavy rain, a rising dam brings floating timber and discoloured water; clearer arms and creek mouths away from the main inflow are often easier to fish. On a big impoundment, the seven-day change column shows whether the lake has been steady, and a steady level makes it easier to find fish in the same places from one trip to the next.
The table covers all Queensland storages in the Bureau of Meteorology’s record, large irrigation dams and small town weirs alike. Because the Bureau’s data typically trails by a day or two, a flood rise may show on Seqwater’s or Sunwater’s own pages first.

Since 2016 Wivenhoe’s full supply level has been temporarily set at about 90 per cent, and Somerset’s at about 80 per cent, while Somerset Dam is improved. Seqwater makes flood releases if either dam rises above those levels.
