The lake
Lake Awoonga is the storage of the Awoonga Dam on the Boyne River, south-west of Gladstone, and it is the impoundment that put Queensland’s stocked barramundi on the map: a big, timbered lake of bays and arms where fish stocked as fingerlings by the local group grow to sizes the rivers rarely produce, with a boat ramp, a caravan park and a swimming area at the dam end and hire boats on the water. When the dam spills in a wet season, its fish end up in the Boyne below, which is why the river at Gladstone is famous too. Species and seasons
Barramundi are the fish, from spring through autumn when the water is warm, on the points, the timber and the weed edges at dawn, dusk and at night, with a summer that can be too hot at midday and a winter that shuts them down; the impoundment fish are exempt from the east coast closed season because they are in a stocked dam, and the Queensland Government publishes that exemption and the size and bag rules. Mangrove jack, sooty grunter and saratoga are also stocked, redclaw crayfish are a pot fishery, and the local stocking group lists what goes into the lake each year.
