Cecil Plains Weir
Cecil Plains Weir holds a pool on the Condamine River beside the cotton town of Cecil Plains on the western Darling Downs, a slow, timbered river between irrigated farms. It is one of the Murray-Darling weirs the Queensland Government stocks for the permit scheme. The Bureau of Meteorology publishes a watercourse level at the weir rather than a storage level, and the chart on this page shows that series.
Species and seasons
Golden perch, Murray cod and silver perch are the species the Queensland Government lists as stocked at Cecil Plains. Yellowbelly are the fish most anglers take, on shrimp, worms and spinnerbaits around the timber through the warm months; Murray cod sit in the deeper holes and the log jams; silver perch school in the open pool. Queensland closes Murray cod from 1 August to 31 October in its Murray-Darling waters, and the weir is not an exempt dam; the species card computes the closure.
Where to fish it
The banks near the weir wall and along the town reach are the shore access at Cecil Plains, and a kayak or a small boat covers the pool upstream where the Condamine’s fallen red gums hold the cod. The run below the weir fishes after a flow, and the holes upstream are the summer yellowbelly water at dawn.
