The Proserpine at the Bruce Highway
The Proserpine River runs past the sugar town of Proserpine on the Whitsunday coast and down through mangroves to the sea near Conway, with the Bruce Highway crossing it at the town. Species and seasons
Barramundi are the prize of the Proserpine, in the freshwater reaches around the town and the tidal reaches below, on hardbodies and soft plastics along the snags and the drains; mangrove jack and grunter hold in the tidal water. The east coast barramundi closed season, 1 November to 31 January, applies to the river, tidal and fresh; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The crossings and reserves near Proserpine give bank access to the fresh reaches, and the tidal river below is fished from boats launched on the coast. Estuarine crocodiles live in the river: stay back from the water’s edge and never clean fish at the bank. The snags and the drains along the fresh reaches near the town hold barramundi after the wet, and the mangrove creeks of the tidal river below are fished from a boat for jacks and grunter.
