The lake
Lake Proserpine is the Peter Faust Dam on the Proserpine River west of Proserpine and Airlie Beach, a broad, warm impoundment in cane and cattle country under the Clarke Range with a camping ground, a ramp and a kiosk at the dam, and drowned timber and weed across its shallow arms. It is one of the state’s best-known barramundi dams, stocked since the 1990s, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at the dam supplies the level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Barramundi are the reason people come, in the weed, the timber and along the points at dawn, dusk and at night through the warm months, with the biggest fish over a metre; the dam is on the Queensland Government’s exempt list, so the closure does not apply and the species card shows open all year. Sooty grunter fish the rocky edges, red claw are a pot fishery, and the stocking group publishes its releases. Crocodiles are recorded in the lake and the signs say so.
Where to fish it
The ramp and the camp at the dam launch onto the main basin, and the weed beds of the shallow western arms and the drowned timber up the river arm are the barramundi water; the rock walls near the dam hold fish in the cooler months. Night fishing over the weed with surface lures and soft plastics in summer is the local method, and the lake is a boat fishery with bank access at the camp.
