The Stanley at Woodford
Woodford is the town on the Stanley River north-west of Brisbane, known for its folk festival, where the river runs between farmland and forest toward Lake Somerset, with Woodford Weir holding a pool near the town. The river through the year
The Stanley River rises in the ranges around Peachester and the Blackall Range and flows west past Woodford to Lake Somerset, the lake that the Somerset Dam holds on the Stanley before it joins the Brisbane River. At Woodford the weir holds a pool through the town, and the river above and below it is a small stream of runs and pools under casuarinas and gums. It is clear through the dry winter and spring and rises quickly with the summer storms. Bass are the fish, most active on the surface on summer evenings; eel-tailed catfish and spangled perch also live in the river. The weir pool is fished from the bank and by kayak.
