Baroon Pocket Dam
Baroon Pocket Dam, the reservoir the gazetteer calls Lake Baroon, sits on Obi Obi Creek in the Blackall Range behind the Sunshine Coast, between Montville and Maleny, a steep-sided lake of drowned rainforest gullies and timber that supplies the coast’s water and is run by Seqwater. It is one of the Queensland Government’s stocked impoundments, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at the dam supplies the storage level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
The Queensland Government lists Australian bass and Mary River cod as the species stocked at Baroon Pocket. Bass are the lake’s everyday fish, schooling along the drop-offs and holding in the drowned timber, taken on soft plastics, spinnerbaits and surface lures at dawn and dusk; Mary River cod are the rarer prize of the snags and are a species the state manages closely. There is no closed season for bass in the dam, and the species card on this page is scored for bass only.
Where to fish it
The access points Seqwater keeps open on the Montville and Maleny sides are where Baroon Pocket is fished from the shore, casting to the points and the timber edges, and a kayak or a small craft under Seqwater’s boating rules reaches the drowned gullies and the arms where the bass school. The upper arms toward the Obi Obi inflow fish after rain; the deeper water near the wall holds fish through the summer heat.
Planning a visit
Baroon Pocket is an easy day trip from the Sunshine Coast and from Brisbane, up the range roads to Montville or Maleny, and the villages on the ridge have food, fuel and accommodation. The permit can be bought online before the trip. Bring light spin gear for bass, a kayak if you have one, and something warm for the dawn session in winter, when the range is cool and misty.
