The lake
Myponga Reservoir is a SA Water storage on the Myponga River on the Fleurieu Peninsula south of Adelaide, opened to recreation in 2019 under the state’s reservoirs program with shore fishing from designated areas, kayaking and walking trails, all under a free online permit and set hours. It is a lake in rolling farmland an hour from the city, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge on the reservoir supplies the level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Native fish have been stocked under the state’s program, with golden perch and Murray cod among the releases announced, and redfin and carp are the resident fish; the SA Water reservoirs page and PIRSA’s stocking notices linked here list what has gone in, and this site does not add to them. The natives fish the edges and the drop-offs from spring to autumn, the redfin through the year; PIRSA’s limits and any cod season apply.
Where to fish it
The designated shore areas near the entrance and along the trail are the access, and kayaks launch from the point the program sets; the drop-offs and the edges of the arms are where the natives hold. Powered boats are not allowed; the hours and the areas are SA Water’s.

Myponga is the reservoir most Adelaide anglers reach first on the way south, an hour from the city on the road to Victor Harbor and Kangaroo Island, and it pairs with a morning on the coast: the reservoir at first light for the natives and the redfin, then Normanville or the Victor Harbor jetties in the afternoon. The kayak launch and the trails make it a family outing as much as a fishing one.
