The Arm River above the Mersey
The Arm River runs off the high country near the Walls of Jerusalem through forest to the Mersey below Lake Rowallan; the gauge sits just above the junction. Species and seasons
Brown trout are the fish of the Arm River, in the pools and runs on the fly and small lures. The general river rules apply: open from the first Saturday of August to the Sunday nearest 30 April, computed on the species card; the Code’s rules for national park waters apply where the river runs through the park.
Where to fish it
The Mersey Forest Road and the tracks off it give access to the Arm; it is steep forest country, walked and waded.

Mole Creek and Deloraine are the nearest towns with supplies. The Arm River track is a walking route into the Walls of Jerusalem.
The river through the year
The Arm River comes off the high country around the Walls of Jerusalem, where snow lies through the winter, so its flow rises with the thaw and the spring rain and runs cold well into the season. Early in the season, from August, the river is high, cold and hard to fish, and the trout lie deep; from late spring the water warms and falls, and the trout move into the runs and rise to the hatches. Summer is the best time, when the water is lower and clearer, and the fish are wild and wary in clear water. The forest country around it is steep and wet, and the tracks can be slippery after rain. A light rod, a few dry flies and nymphs, and a map of the access tracks are the kit for it.
