The Elizabeth at Campbell Town
Campbell Town is the Midlands town on the Midland Highway where the Elizabeth River runs under the convict-built Red Bridge on its way from Lake Leake in the eastern hills to the Macquarie. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge above the Macquarie junction, near the town, has not reported recent readings to Water Data Online, so this page carries no level chart. The Macquarie near Ross has its own page.
Species and seasons
Wild brown trout are the fish of the Elizabeth River, in the runs and the weedy pools on the fly, lures and bait. The Elizabeth is not listed separately in the Inland Fishing Code, so it follows the general river rules: open from the first Saturday of August to the Sunday nearest 30 April, computed on the species card, with a bag of five fish over 220 mm.
Where to fish it
The reserve by the Red Bridge in Campbell Town gives access to the river in the town, and the crossings upstream toward Lake Leake reach the quieter water. Much of the frontage is private farmland. The pools near the Red Bridge and the weedy runs upstream are the trout water, fished with small nymphs and dry flies in the spring hatches and with light spinners when the river is up.

Campbell Town is on the Midland Highway halfway between Hobart and Launceston, with cafes, supplies and accommodation, and the Red Bridge is in the town centre. Bring light trout gear, and fish the spring and autumn months, when the river is at its best.
