Fishing Lake Crescent: the full guide
The lake
Lake Crescent is a natural lake on the Central Plateau at Interlaken, joined to Lake Sorell by a short canal, a shallow, weedy, turbid water that the Inland Fisheries Service manages as a trophy brown trout fishery with its own rules, after years of closure and carp eradication work that removed the pest from the lake. It is reached by gravel road from Bothwell or Tunbridge, with a ramp and shore access, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Tea Tree Point supplies the level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Brown trout of trophy size are the fishery, grown large on the rich, shallow water, fished on lures along the edges and the weed and on the fly in the shallows, artificial lure and fly only, one fish a day of at least 500 mm, and only from an hour before sunrise to three hours after sunset, as the Inland Fisheries Service sets for Crescent; the lake follows the brown trout season, first Saturday of August to the Sunday nearest 30 April, computed on the species card. Golden galaxias, the native, are protected. Carp were eradicated and the service asks anglers to report any sighting.
Where to fish it
The ramp and the shore at the eastern end are the access, and the weed edges and the shallow bays are the water, fished from a boat in the turbid conditions or waded along the edges when the level allows; the canal to Sorell is closed water. The service posts the Crescent rules at the ramp.
Reading the report
Shallow and exposed, Crescent is stirred to mud by a wind and the wind row decides the day; the water temperature estimate, labelled as one, is cold for most of the season, and the chart shows the level the service and the irrigators manage. Snow falls on the plateau in any month; pressure and sky fill the score.
