The reach
The Huon at Judbury is the river above Huonville as it comes out of the south-west forests and runs through the apple and cherry orchards of the Huon Valley, wide and clear over gravel runs and pools with the Judbury bridge, the reserves and the road crossings toward Ranelagh. It is wild trout water above the tide, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Judbury supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. The Huon below the Huonville bridge is open all year under the IFS list; this reach follows the season.
Species and seasons
Brown trout are wild and are the fishery, in the runs and the pools on the fly, lures and bait; sea-run trout push up from the estuary in spring and are the Huon’s particular fish; Atlantic salmon escape from the farms downstream and are taken; and the reach follows the brown trout season the Inland Fisheries Service publishes, first Saturday of August to the Sunday nearest 30 April, computed on the species card. Bream are in the tidal river below.
Where to fish it
The Judbury bridge and the reserves give bank access to the runs and the pools, the crossings toward Ranelagh give the lower reach, and a drift boat or a kayak covers the river down to the tidal limit at Huonville; the runs fish for sea-runners in spring on lures. The estuary at Huonville and Franklin is a different fishery.
