The Jordan at Mauriceton
The Jordan River runs through the dry southern midlands from Lake Tiberias past Kempton and Brighton to the Derwent at Bridgewater; Mauriceton is a gauging site on its course near Kempton. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Mauriceton supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Brown trout are the fish of the Jordan, in the pools and weedy runs on the fly, lures and bait. The general river rules apply: open from the first Saturday of August to the Sunday nearest 30 April, computed on the species card, with a bag of five fish over 220 mm.
Where to fish it
The road crossings between Kempton and Brighton give access to the river; the valley is private farmland, so ask before crossing.
Planning a visit
Kempton and Brighton are on the Midland Highway north of Hobart. The Jordan runs low in dry summers, so spring is the time to fish it.
The river through the year
The Jordan runs through one of the driest parts of Tasmania, the rain shadow of the southern midlands, and it is a small, slow river for most of the year, running between weedy pools and shallow riffles, and sometimes nearly stopping in a dry summer. Its flow comes from winter rain on the hills around Lake Tiberias and the midland tiers, so the early season, from August, is when it runs best. The weed beds hold the trout and the insects they feed on, and in the warmer months the fish rise in the pools on still evenings. In a long dry summer the water warms, the trout become lethargic, and the fishing is best at first light. A good flow after spring rain is the moment to fish the Jordan.
