The reach
The Meander at Deloraine is the river as it comes off the Great Western Tiers and runs through the town’s river parks and under the Deloraine bridge toward the South Esk, cold and clear over gravel runs and pools with the town walk, the reserves and the Meander Dam’s releases far upstream. It is wild brown trout water in a town, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at the Deloraine bridge supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Brown trout are wild and are the fishery, in the runs and the pools on bait, lures and the fly, with the spring hatches on the town reach a family fishing event; rainbow trout are stocked in some years; and the river follows the brown trout season the Inland Fisheries Service publishes, first Saturday of August to the Sunday nearest 30 April, computed on the species card. Redfin are few this high.
Where to fish it
The river parks and the town walk give bank access through Deloraine, the bridge pools fish at dusk, and the road crossings upstream toward Meander give the faster water under the tiers; the river is a wader’s water in the runs and the pool heads.
