The Swan River at The Grange
Tasmania’s Swan River runs from the Eastern Tiers south through the dry grazing country near Cranbrook to Moulting Lagoon and Great Oyster Bay, north of Swansea on the east coast; The Grange is a gauging site on its middle reaches. It is a different river from the Swan in Western Australia. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at The Grange supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Brown trout are the fish of the Swan, in the pools and runs on the fly, lures and bait; the lower river toward Moulting Lagoon is bream water. The general river rules of the Inland Fishing Code apply: open from the first Saturday of August to the Sunday nearest 30 April, computed on the species card, with a bag of five fish over 220 mm.
Where to fish it
The road crossings between Cranbrook and the Tasman Highway give access to the river; much of the valley is private grazing land.
Planning a visit
Swansea, on the coast, has supplies and accommodation, and Freycinet is nearby. Bring light trout gear; the east coast is dry and the river can run low in summer.
The river through the year
The Swan drains the dry east coast, and it runs best after winter rain and can drop very low in summer, when the trout keep to the deeper pools. The season opens in August with the river at its fullest, and from spring the trout rise in the pools on still evenings. In a dry summer the river can stop running between pools, and the water warms. Below The Grange the river runs toward Moulting Lagoon, where the bream take over from the trout.
