The Campaspe at Redesdale
Redesdale is the village on the Campaspe River in central Victoria where the river runs through granite country and red gum flats toward Lake Eppalock, with the old iron bridge over the river. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Redesdale supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. Lake Eppalock and the Campaspe at Rochester have their own pages.
Species and seasons
Murray cod and golden perch are the fish of the Campaspe around Redesdale, in the snags and the granite pools, on lures and bait; redfin and trout are also caught. The Campaspe River is not on the VFA’s list of waters exempt from the Murray cod closed season, so cod are closed from 1 September to 30 November here, unlike Lake Eppalock itself; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
The reserve by the bridge at Redesdale and the public access points along the river give bank access to the pools, and a kayak covers the reaches in higher flows. The upper end of Eppalock is a short drive away. The granite pools near the bridge and the snags in the reaches upstream hold the cod and the yellowbelly, and a spinnerbait worked along the rock edges is the classic Campaspe lure.
Planning a visit
Redesdale is on the road between Kyneton and Heathcote in central Victoria, a small village with a pub near the bridge, and Lake Eppalock is a short drive north. Bring cod lures and bait for yellowbelly, and remember that the river, unlike the lake, is closed for cod in spring.
