Golden perch
Best: November to April
Yellowbelly. The bread-and-butter native of the Murray-Darling lakes and rivers; loves warm water, structure and a lure worked slowly past its nose. Slower. Work the deeper timber and the drop-offs with vibes and bait.

Fishing Lake Eppalock: the full guide
The lake
Lake Eppalock is a storage on the Campaspe River south-east of Bendigo in central Victoria, a broad reservoir of flooded farmland and standing timber with arms running up the Campaspe and Coliban valleys and the settlements of Kimbolton, Derrinal and Knowsley on its shores. It is a native fish lake first: golden perch and Murray cod in the timber and along the rock walls, redfin in the bays, and carp everywhere, with the level rising in winter and spring and drawing down through summer for irrigation. The level at the top of the page is read from the Bureau of Meteorology’s Water Data Online, with the time of the reading beside it.
Species by season
Golden perch are the lake’s fish, from spring through autumn around the standing timber, the rock walls and the points, on lipless crankbaits, spinnerbaits and bait; Murray cod fish the same timber in the warmer months, with the closed season from September to November that the Victorian Fisheries Authority publishes and this site links; redfin school in the bays and along the drop-offs all year and are the winter fish; and carp are present, with the VFA rules on their release. The lake fishes from the bank in many places and from small boats and kayaks in the arms.
