The giant of the inland rivers and the big lakes (Hume, Mulwala, Eildon). A snag fish that eats big lures, and a species with a closed season across the Murray-Darling. Slow it down: heavier spinnerbaits, slow-rolled swimbaits and bait on the bottom next to the deep snags.
Golden perch
Best: November to April
Yellowbelly. The bread-and-butter native of the Murray-Darling lakes and rivers; loves warm water, structure and a lure worked slowly past its nose. Slower. Work the deeper timber and the drop-offs with vibes and bait.

Fishing Lake Nagambie: the full guide
The lake
Lake Nagambie is the pool of the Goulburn Weir, the 1891 structure on the Goulburn River that diverts water to Waranga Basin and the irrigation districts, a long, timbered river lake with the town of Nagambie on its western shore, wineries on the hills, a foreshore, ramps and the rowing course. The VFA defines it as all the impounded water from the weir up to Chinamans Bridge, and it is a Murray cod water of reputation; the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at the weir supplies the level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Murray cod are the fishery, in the drowned timber, the snags and the deeper bends of the old river channel, on big lures, surface lures at night and bait, with the VFA bag of two in this listed lake and the September to November closure computed on the species card; golden perch fish the same timber from spring to autumn; redfin and carp are present, the carp under the VFA rules. The Goulburn below the weir is trout, cod and perch water with the stream closure for trout.
Where to fish it
The town foreshore, the jetties and the rowing course banks give bank access, and the ramps put a boat into the timber upstream toward Chinamans Bridge, where the cod are; the old river channel through the lake is the deep water in a draw-down and a sounder finds it. Night fishing with surface lures along the timber is the summer method.
Reading the report
