The reach
The Goulburn at Seymour is the river below Trawool where the tailrace rules end and the natives take over, running through the town’s river parks and under the highway bridges over deep pools, snags and gravel toward Nagambie and the weir, with the Seymour bushland park and the caravan parks on its banks. It is cod and perch water with trout still in it, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Seymour supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Murray cod fish the snags, the deep pools and the bridge pylons through summer and autumn on lures and bait, with the VFA bag of one in the river and the closure from 1 September to 30 November computed on the species card; golden perch fish the same water from spring to autumn; trout hold in the runs in the cool months, with the river below Trawool under the general stream closure rather than the tailrace ban; redfin and carp are present under the VFA rules.
Where to fish it
The river parks, the bushland park and the bridges give bank access at the town, a kayak covers the pools upstream toward Trawool and downstream toward Nagambie, and the deep outside bends and the timber are the cod water; the runs fish for trout at dawn in the cool months.
