The reach
The Murray at Echuca is the river at the old paddle-steamer port, running past the historic wharf and the Campaspe junction between Echuca on the Victorian bank and Moama on the New South Wales one, with river parks, caravan parks, ramps and the red gum forests of Barmah and the Murray Valley either way. It is classic cod water on the river’s busiest tourist reach, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Echuca supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Murray cod fish the snags, the wharf pylons and the deep bends through summer and autumn on lures and bait, with the VFA bag of one in the river and the closure from 1 September to 30 November computed on the species card; golden perch are the everyday fish from spring to autumn; silver perch are protected and go back; and carp are numerous under the VFA rules. The Moama bank follows the New South Wales rule with the same dates.
Where to fish it
The wharf reach, the river parks and the caravan parks give bank access at the towns, the ramps put a boat onto reaches of snags upstream toward Barmah and downstream toward Torrumbarry, and the Campaspe junction fishes for perch when that river runs; the deep outside bends and the timber are the cod water. Night fishing with surface lures along the snags is the summer method, and the paddle-steamers keep to the day.
