The reach
The Murray at Mildura is the river of the Sunraysia, wide and slow through the vineyards and the red gums, held by Lock 11 into a long weir pool past the town wharf, the rowing club, the river parks and the caravan parks, with Wentworth and the Darling junction downstream and the Lindsay and Mulcra forests upstream. It is cod and perch water on a big river, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge above Mildura supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Murray cod fish the snags, the weir and the deep bends through summer and autumn on bait and lures, with the VFA bag of one in the river and the closure from 1 September to 30 November computed on the species card; golden perch are the everyday fish from spring to autumn; silver perch are protected; and carp are the numbers fish under the VFA rules. The New South Wales bank follows the DPIRD rule with the same dates.
Where to fish it
The wharf reach, the river parks and the caravan parks give bank access at the city, the water below Lock 11 is the classic cod hole, and the ramps put a boat onto the weir pool upstream and the river downstream toward Wentworth; the deep outside bends and the timber are the cod water. Night fishing with bait along the snags is the Sunraysia method.
