Best: November to April

The reach
Wentworth is where the Darling meets the Murray in the far south-west of New South Wales, a river town of paddle-steamer history with Lock 10 and its weir just below the junction, river parks on both rivers, caravan parks and a long, wide, slow Murray backed up by the lock. It is big-river cod and perch water, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Lock 10 supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Murray cod are the fish, in the deep water below the weir, the snags and the junction itself through summer and autumn on bait and big lures, closed from 1 September to 30 November under the New South Wales rule computed on the species card; golden perch are the everyday fish from spring to autumn, and the Darling junction brings them on when that river runs; silver perch are protected; and carp are the numbers fish, with the DPIRD rules. The Victorian bank downstream follows the VFA rule.
Where to fish it
The junction park, the river parks on the Darling and the Murray, and the weir below Lock 10 are the bank spots, with the water below the weir the classic cod hole; the ramps put a boat onto the backed-up Murray upstream toward Mildura and the Darling upstream toward Pooncarie. A rise in the Darling colours the junction and moves the perch, and the Darling’s own page tracks the river above.
Reading the report
The lock holds the Murray level nearly steady, so the chart moves little except in a flood; the Darling’s flow, published by the water authority, is the change that matters at the junction. The water temperature estimate, labelled as one, runs hot in the far west summer and gives the cod band from November to April; the wind crosses the open river flats; pressure counts before a summer storm.
