The Darling at Burtundy
Burtundy is a gauging site on the lower Darling River in the station country north of Wentworth, on the last long reach of the river before it meets the Murray at Wentworth, winding between river red gums and saltbush. The Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Burtundy supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. The Murray at Wentworth and the Darling at Pooncarie have their own pages.
Species and seasons
Murray cod and golden perch are the fish of the lower Darling, the cod in the snags and deep bends on lures and bait, the yellowbelly on shrimp and worms through the warm months; carp are abundant. The New South Wales Murray cod closure, 1 September to 30 November, applies; the species card computes it.
Where to fish it
Access to the river around Burtundy is from the road between Wentworth and Pooncarie and the public reserves along it; much of the river frontage is station land, so stay on public access.
Planning a visit
Wentworth, at the junction, has supplies, accommodation and ramps, and Mildura is close. Bring cod gear and bait for yellowbelly, and plan around the heat and the roads after rain.
The river through the year
The lower Darling at Burtundy depends largely on releases from the Menindee Lakes upstream, and in dry years, when the lakes are low, it can stop flowing altogether, as it did in the drought of 2019. When the lakes are full and releasing, the river runs steadily through the red gums to Wentworth and the Murray. Cod feed through summer and autumn in the snags and deep bends, and golden perch bite best on a rising river in the warm months.
