Fishing Newlyn Reservoir: the full guide
The lake
Newlyn Reservoir is a small Central Highlands Water storage north of Ballarat near the village of Newlyn, on the tableland between Daylesford and Creswick, a shallow lake of open shores and reed beds that the VFA stocks with trout and that fishes from the bank all the way round. It is a short drive from Ballarat and a family fishery, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge on the reservoir supplies the level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Brown and rainbow trout are stocked and are the fish, along the edges and the reed beds from autumn to spring on bait, lures and flies, with the browns growing to good sizes in the rich, shallow water; redfin are the numbers fish through the year and take worms and small lures; and carp are present under the VFA rules. There is no closed season on the reservoir, and the tableland streams around it follow the stream rule.
Where to fish it
The shore is open around most of the lake and the reed edges are the trout water at dawn and dusk, fished with bait under a float, a small minnow or a wet fly; the deeper water near the wall holds the fish in summer. Unpowered craft only, and a kayak covers the lake in an hour.

Newlyn is one of a chain of small Central Highlands storages within half an hour of Ballarat, with Hepburn Lagoon, Tullaroop and Lake Wendouree the others, and an angler chasing trout can fish two of them in a morning when one is slow; Newlyn is the shallowest and the first to warm in spring, which puts its best fishing in the cooler half of the year and its redfin in the summer.
