The Yarra at Warrandyte
Warrandyte is the bush suburb on Melbourne’s north-eastern edge where the Yarra runs through a forested gorge of rocky runs and deep pools, inside the Warrandyte State Park, before it enters the city. Species and seasons
Brown trout, redfin and river blackfish are the fish of the Yarra at Warrandyte, and Murray cod have established in the river and are caught in the deep pools. Victoria’s river trout closure, the Tuesday after the King’s Birthday weekend to the Friday before the first Saturday in September, applies and is what the species card computes; the Yarra is the one river south of the Divide where the VFA keeps the Murray cod closed season, 1 September to 30 November.
Where to fish it
The riverside reserves, the Warrandyte State Park tracks and the bridge in the village give access to the pools and runs, and the gorge below is walked and fished from the rocks.
Planning a visit
Warrandyte is under an hour from central Melbourne, with cafes and parking along the river. Bring light gear, and fish early on weekends, when the river is busy.

The Yarra at Warrandyte rises quickly after heavy rain and runs clearer in dry spells. Its flow is partly regulated by the reservoirs of the upper Yarra, which supply Melbourne, and after dry spells the rapids at Warrandyte run low and clear.
