The reach
The Steavenson runs off the Cathedral Range and the Yarra Ranges past the Steavenson Falls into the town of Marysville and on through Buxton to the Acheron and the Goulburn, a small, cold, clear stream over gravel and rock through a valley rebuilt after the 2009 fires, with the town’s river walk, the falls road and the reserves. It is a trout stream of the Marysville kind, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at the falls supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page.
Species and seasons
Brown and rainbow trout are the fish, wild and stocked, in the pools and the runs on the fly, spinners and bait, under the Victorian stream closure from the Tuesday after the King’s Birthday weekend to the Friday before the first Saturday of September, computed on the species card; blackfish are in the deeper pools under their own rules; and the town’s stocking makes the river walk reach a family fishery in the open season.
Where to fish it
The river walk and the town reserves give bank access through Marysville, the falls road gives the upper river below the falls, and the reaches through Buxton toward the Acheron junction are reached from the road crossings; the river is a wader’s water in the runs and the pool heads. Dawn and dusk are the trout hours.
