The reach
The Fitzroy at Fitzroy Crossing is the great Kimberley river where the highway crosses it, a river that runs a wet-season torrent kilometres wide and dries to a chain of pools through the dry, with the old and new bridges, the town’s river camps, Geikie Gorge upstream and the pools of the crossing itself. It is barramundi and grunter water of the wild kind, and the Bureau of Meteorology’s gauge at Fitzroy Crossing supplies the river level and the 30-day chart on this page. It is not the Fitzroy of Queensland or Victoria, which have their own pages.
Species and seasons
Barramundi fish the pools, the rock bars and the snags through the dry and on the run-off, with no closed season in Western Australia and DPIRD’s size and bag limits the rule; sooty grunter are in every pool; catfish and archer fish are everywhere; and the freshwater sawfish, protected, lives in the pools and must go back untouched. Freshwater crocodiles are in every pool and saltwater crocodiles reach far up the river.
Where to fish it
The bridges and the town camps give bank access to the crossing pools, Geikie Gorge upstream is a national park with a boat ramp and cruises, and a boat or a kayak covers the pools between when the river holds water; the rock bars and the deep pools are the barramundi and grunter water. Aboriginal land along much of the river has its own permits.
Reading the report
The chart is the wet and the dry: a wet-season rise of metres in days that closes the highway, and a dry-season fall to pools that the chart shows drying; the run-off as the river drops is the barramundi time.
