The Red River at Selkirk
The Red River flows north from the United States through Winnipeg and past the St. Andrews Lock and Dam at Lockport and the town of Selkirk to Lake Winnipeg. The stretch from Lockport down to the lake is famous for two fish: giant channel catfish in summer, and big walleye, the greenbacks, that run up from the lake in the fall. Species and seasons
Channel catfish are fished from late spring into fall, with big fish below the Lockport dam; walleye run up from Lake Winnipeg in the fall and are fished through the ice near the river mouth in winter. Manitoba’s rules for the Red River, including catch-and-release rules for large catfish, are in the anglers’ guide.
Where to fish it
The water below the Lockport dam is the classic spot, fished from boats and from the shore; the river through Selkirk and down to the lake is fished from boats and from the parks along the bank.
Planning a visit
Selkirk and Lockport are about thirty minutes north of Winnipeg, with guides who run catfish and walleye trips. The river floods in spring in some years, and its current is strong below the dam. Lower Fort Garry, a national historic site, stands on the river between Lockport and Selkirk, and Selkirk’s riverfront has the Marine Museum of Manitoba.

Spring floods raise the river, sometimes for weeks; summer is the catfish season; fall brings the walleye; winter brings the ice near the lake. The Red River Floodway, which carries floodwater around Winnipeg, rejoins the river near Lockport.
