El Capitan Reservoir dates from 1935, when El Capitan Dam was completed about 30 miles northeast of downtown San Diego on the San Diego River. At full pool the city gives it 1,562 surface acres, a maximum depth of 197 feet, 22 miles of shoreline and 112,806.9 acre-feet of storage. It had the largest capacity in the city system until the San Vicente Dam raise was finished in 2015.
