The pier and the beachfront

Oceanside Pier (rebuilt and reopened after its fire) walks 1,900 feet of fishing history: mackerel and bonito schools around the pilings, halibut on live smelt in the sand pockets, sharays after dark for the rail regulars. The beaches north and south run the standard SoCal surf menu: corbina and spotfin croaker in summer's wash, barred perch through winter on Carolina-rigged crabs.

Harbor and the thresher coast

Oceanside Harbor launches the north county fleet: calico bass in the kelp off Carlsbad, rockfish on the drops (in season), and the region's signature spring event: thresher sharks working bait schools inside a mile of the beach, trolled or chunked by a devoted local fleet that mostly releases. White seabass ghosts patrol the same lanes on squid years.

Camp Pendleton's shadow

North of the harbor, the Marine base locks 17 miles of coast: the least-pressured kelp and hard bottom in Southern California sits just outside its buoys. The boats that work the boundary edges find calicos and seabass that rarely meet hooks: Oceanside is the civilian gateway to that emptiness.

A north-county year

Winter: perch on the beaches, sand bass on the flats, whale-watching doubling as bird-school scouting. Spring: threshers arrive, halibut spread over the flats, yellowtail at the outer kelp on warm currents. Summer: croaker-and-corbina surf mornings, calico kelp afternoons, pelagic fever offshore. Fall: bonito runs at the pier, squid nests forming, the quiet rebuild.

When do thresher sharks show at Oceanside?

March-June, shadowing bait schools within sight of the beach: the harbor fleet trolls and chunks for them at dawn. Most fish are released: the fight, not the fillet, is the point.

Is the Oceanside Pier open for fishing?

Yes: rebuilt after the 2024 fire, the pier fishes daily with no license required. The end sections and the surf line pilings are the productive stands: mackerel schools set the day's pace.
