The hatchery lake

Amador runs its own hatchery: the lake's famous 'cutbows' (Amador-strain crosses bred on-site) plant all cool season at sizes that bend rods double: 3-8-pound stockers as the norm, teens every year. Few California waters put trophy-shaped trout in front of bait soakers this reliably: the lake's identity is the plant truck's schedule.

Working the plants

October-May is the program: inflated crawlers and dough baits off the dam and spillway points, trolling grubs and spoons at 5-15 ft through the main channel, and float tubes stripping buggers when the bite goes soft. The lake posts plant days: mornings after are carnival: drift the edges of the crowd and match the depth.

Summer's second lake

When trout season fades, Amador's warm side wakes: largemouth in the flooded willows and rockpiles (the lake grows quality fish on the trout-fry diet), crappie under the docks at night, and channel cats on the flats: the family stays busy while the hatchery rests. No wakes lake-wide keeps everything calm.

Foothill practicalities

The resort runs it all: entry fee, ramps, rentals, café scoreboard of the week's giants.
