Southern Colorado's mixed bag

Pueblo is Colorado's warm-water flagship: a genuine walleye program (spring jigging the dam riprap), hard-pulling wipers over open water, smallmouth on every rocky point and enough shad to keep it all fed. The Arkansas tailwater below adds year-round trout minutes away.

Walleye on the rocks

Spring belongs to the dam: April walleye stack the riprap face and the west-end points, jigged with grubs and crawlers at first light. Summer scatters them to 20-35 ft humps: bottom bouncers cover water. The state-record class swims here: Pueblo grows them faster than the mountain lakes above.

The tailwater bonus

Below the dam, the Arkansas through Pueblo is a year-round trout tailwater with urban access: a legitimate second trip in the same drive. Wipers and smallmouth fill the lake's warm months: rocky points at dawn, sandy flats at dusk.

Pueblo anchors Colorado's walleye program: the state takes its hatchery eggs here each March, and the fishery shows the density: jigs on the rocky points at ice-out, bottom bouncers across the flats in June, and a night-trolling crowd pulling stickbaits over 10-20 ft all summer.
