Where the plains meet the mountains

Trinidad Lake covers about 800 acres on the Purgatoire River in southern Colorado, a Corps reservoir in the transition country where the high plains rise toward the Sangre de Cristos. The state park around it provides good access. The fishery is mixed: walleye, smallmouth and largemouth bass, channel catfish, crappie and stocked trout in the cool months.

Walleye and bass

Walleye hold the rocky points and shorelines: jigs at dusk in spring, trolled harnesses through summer. Smallmouth work the rock and riprap, largemouth the brushier coves and the upper end where the Purgatoire comes in. The lake is small enough to cover thoroughly in a day, and pressure is modest compared with the Front Range reservoirs.
