Florida has more moving seasons than any other state, and two of them — gag grouper and red snapper — are reset by executive order each year. What was true last summer is routinely wrong this one.
Every season we have verified in Florida
One block per rule, because a single species can be on two calendars in the same state depending on the water. The band under each heading is the legal season; the row under it is what our own data says the fish are doing.
Grouper — Gulf state waters, excluding Monroe County
Set by FWC executive order for 2026 to match the federal Gulf season, and harvest closes at 12:01 a.m. on October 1. This is a one-month window that has landed in April, June and September in different years: the date is not a habit, it is a decision taken each year.

Grouper — Atlantic state waters and all state waters off Monroe County
Recreational gag harvest closed on August 2, 2026 by executive order and stays closed for the rest of the year. The Keys follow the Atlantic rule here even though they sit on the Gulf side, which is the trap in this regulation.
Red snapper — Gulf state and federal waters, private anglers
A 140-day season, the longest since Florida took over management, but it is not one block: daily through the summer, daily again from September 1 to October 4, then three-day and two-day weekends into November, with a final daily stretch at New Year. Every private-vessel angler must be registered as a State Reef Fish Angler, even those exempt from needing a licence.

Crab — Statewide
Open all year with five traps per person, pulled by hand in daylight. What closes is the traps, not the season: Florida runs ten-day regional trap closures to clear derelict gear, on the east coast in even years and the west coast in odd ones, and you can still crab those weeks with a dip net.

Oyster — Statewide, outside Apalachicola Bay
The summer closure is the season. Most of the state is shut from July 1 to September 30; Dixie, Levy and Wakulla close a month earlier and reopen a month earlier. Hand or tong only.

Oyster — Apalachicola Bay
Apalachicola was shut from 2020 and reopened for a two-month winter window under a lottery permit, with a limited number of Apalachicola Bay Recreational Opportunity permits issued to Florida residents. Treat it as an event to apply for, not a season to turn up for.

What the water is doing while the season is open
This is the part an agency page will not tell you. The temperature row above is the seasonal curve we use for the 17 of 33 Florida waters we track on a gulf inshore profile, and it is why an opening date and a fishable date are not the same thing. A season that opens while the water is still in the forties is a legal invitation, not a biological one: the fish are there, they are just not eating on your schedule yet. Cross the legal band against the activity row before you book the day off.

When does fishing season open in Florida?
It depends on the species: grouper september 1 to september 30; grouper closed for the rest of the year; red snapper may 22–july 31, september 1–october 4, october 9–november 22, january 1–january 4. Every date on this page was read off FWC on 2026-09-14.
Do I need a licence to fish in Florida?
Yes. Florida requires a fishing licence from age 16, from $17.00 for residents. A season being open is not permission to fish: the licence is separate and so are the size and bag limits.
Are these Florida dates going to change?
Some of them, and the page says which. Dates written as a rule in the regulations are calculated here for 2026, so they follow the rule rather than going stale. Dates the agency sets each year are shown as exactly that, with no calendar band, because inventing one would be worse than leaving it empty.
