A city reservoir

Lucky Peak Reservoir covers about 2,800 acres on the Boise River just east of the city, a Corps flood-control lake in the foothills. Its proximity makes it Boise’s recreation water, busy on summer weekends, but the fishery is legitimate: kokanee salmon, rainbow and brown trout, smallmouth bass and perch, with the cold Boise River water keeping conditions good.

Kokanee and trout

Kokanee are the main draw: troll small dodger-hoochie rigs from 30 to 70 feet through the summer, with fish schooling tightly and running good numbers. Rainbow and brown trout hold shallower in spring and fall, taking trolled spoons and stickbaits.
