Fishing Payette River: the full guide

A river of three forks

The Payette River drains the Idaho mountains north of Boise through the North Fork, South Fork and Middle Fork before running to the Snake at Payette. It is best known for whitewater, with the South Fork canyon a rafting destination, but it also holds rainbow and brown trout, mountain whitefish and, in the lower river, smallmouth bass and channel catfish.

Trout in the forks

The South Fork below Deadwood and the North Fork through the canyon hold trout in pocket water and pools: nymphs, streamers and attractor dries once flows drop after runoff. The Middle Fork and upper tributaries offer smaller water with less pressure. Wading is serious in a river built for whitewater: pick your reaches carefully.

Season and flows

Runoff dominates spring and early summer, making much of the river unfishable and turning it over to rafters. As flows drop through July the fishing opens and stays good into fall. The lower river near Emmett and Payette warms and holds bass and catfish through the summer, an entirely different fishery in the same drainage.

Boise-area logistics

Highway 55 parallels the river through the canyon with numerous pullouts, and the Cascade and Banks areas provide access. Boise is an hour south. Rafting traffic is heavy on summer weekends in the South Fork canyon: fish weekdays or the reaches away from the popular runs.
