A river through limestone

The Blue River flows about 60 miles through the karst country of southern Indiana to the Ohio River, fed by springs rising out of the limestone that riddles this landscape with caves. Those springs keep it cooler and clearer than most Indiana streams, and it holds smallmouth bass, rock bass, sunfish and channel catfish in genuinely attractive water.

The spring influence gives the Blue steadier flows and better clarity than neighboring streams, producing quality smallmouth fishing through the warm months. Tubes, jigs, small crankbaits and topwater worked along the ledges, wood and bluff pools all take fish. The river is designated a State Natural and Scenic River across part of its length.

Cave country

The drainage sits in one of the most cave-rich areas of the country, with Marengo Cave and Squire Boone Caverns nearby, and the karst geology means water disappears and reappears through the system. It also means the river responds sharply to rain and can rise and muddy quickly, then drop back within a few days.

Harrison and Crawford county logistics

Access is via public canoe landings, bridge crossings and outfitters in the Milltown and Fredericksburg areas, with float trips the standard approach. Corydon and Louisville provide services. Summer weekends bring paddling traffic on the popular reaches: fish weekdays for the better experience.
