A flood-control lake

Rough River Lake covers about 5,100 acres on the Rough River in western Kentucky, a Corps flood-control reservoir with a state park on its shore and wooded hills around it. The fishery is broad: largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, catfish and a stocked muskellunge population that gives the lake a trophy dimension most visitors do not expect.

Bass and crappie

Largemouth relate to the timber, brush, rock and boat docks: jigs, plastics and spinnerbaits through the seasons, with spring pushing fish into the creek arms. Crappie stack the brush and dock structure at 8-20 feet, best in spring and fall. The lake is modest in size and easily learned in a weekend.

Muskie and the drawdown

Kentucky stocks muskellunge, which hold the weed edges, points and timber: bucktails and large rubber, with fall the trophy window. The annual winter drawdown for flood storage exposes structure worth scouting and concentrates fish. Below the dam, the Rough River tailwater holds fish during releases.
