Barren River Lake covers about 10,000 acres on the Barren River in south-central Kentucky, a Corps flood-control reservoir in the rolling country south of Bowling Green. Hybrid striped bass are a signature fishery, joined by largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish, with the annual drawdown cycle shaping the habitat.

Hybrids and bass

Hybrid striped bass school over the open water chasing shad, providing hard-fighting action on slabs, swimbaits and topwater when they push bait up, best at dawn in summer and fall. Largemouth relate to the timber, rock and docks, while smallmouth work the rockier points, an underfished component in this part of Kentucky.
