Lake Bistineau covers roughly 15,000 acres at full pool across Bienville, Bossier and Webster parishes in northwest Louisiana, a shallow impoundment on Loggy Bayou filled with cypress trees, standing timber and stumps. It holds largemouth bass, crappie, bream, catfish and chain pickerel in classic Louisiana flooded-timber habitat.

Largemouth relate to the cypress trunks, knees, standing timber and any vegetation, taken on plastics pitched tight, spinnerbaits, and frogs and topwater over the mats and pads. The lake is shallow, so fish stay accessible, but navigating the timber demands care and local knowledge of the running lanes.

Crappie, bream and the drawdowns

Crappie hold the timber and brush and are strongest in spring on jigs and minnows. Bream fill the shallows in the warm months. The lake is periodically drawn down to control giant salvinia, an invasive floating plant that has plagued it, and those drawdowns change access and fishing substantially: check current status before going.
