A bayou impoundment

Lake D’Arbonne covers 15,250 acres on Bayou D’Arbonne in north Louisiana, a shallow, cypress-studded reservoir built in 1961 and long regarded as one of the state’s best crappie and bass lakes. Standing timber, cypress trees, boat docks and grass beds provide cover throughout, and the fertile water grows fish quickly.

Crappie country

Sac-a-lait are the headline: they stack around the cypress, standing timber and brush, with spring the peak as fish move shallow to spawn. Jigs and minnows under corks work the trees; deeper structure and the old bayou channel hold fish in summer and winter. Locals plant and maintain brush piles, and knowing where they are separates good days from great ones.

Bass and bream

Largemouth relate to the cypress knees, laydowns, docks and grass: pitching jigs and Texas rigs to the wood, frogs over the grass in summer, and spinnerbaits along the edges in spring. The lake produces good numbers with occasional heavy fish. Bream fishing around the cypress in late spring is excellent, and catfish work the channel and flats year-round.
