A Louisiana Basic Fishing License is required from age 18. LDWF limits for D'Arbonne Lake: crappie 50 a day in total, no more than 7 over 12 inches; possession 50 on the water and 100 off the water. Black bass follow the statewide limit of 10 a day with no size limit.

The lake

Louisiana State Parks gives Lake D'Arbonne as 15,250 acres, the centerpiece of the 655-acre Lake D'Arbonne State Park in Union Parish, and notes the stands of trees in the lake. LDWF calls it Bayou D'Arbonne Lake and manages it with the Bayou D'Arbonne Lake Watershed District.

A crappie rule aimed at bigger fish

Since November 20, 2022, LDWF has limited anglers to 7 crappie over 12 inches a day within the 50-crappie daily limit. LDWF's assessment had found crappie growth below average, and the rule steers harvest toward the more abundant smaller fish; LDWF planned to evaluate it after at least three years. LDWF also asks anglers not to cull crappie caught from deeper than 20 feet in winter, since those fish usually cannot swim back down.

Drawdowns every four years

LDWF and the watershed district have drawn the lake down every four years since 2004 for shoreline maintenance and control of nuisance vegetation. The 2024 drawdown lowered the lake 5 feet below pool from September 3 to November 15. The lake stays open to fishing, but boat lanes lose their normal clearance over underwater obstructions while the water is down.
