How the Canal works

The Cape Cod Canal connects two bays with a six-knot current that reverses every six hours, and the entire south-side striper migration uses it as a shortcut: June and September stack fish in the ditch, and July's full-moon tides bring the famous topwater mornings when 30-lb bass crash mackerel against the east-end rips. Everything happens within a cast of the paved service road.

The breaking-tide game

Canal regulars live by the 'breaking tides': east-running current at dawn, when bait flushes through and bass pin it to the surface.
