A sheltered bay off the main bay

Greenwich Bay is a shallow embayment on the west side of Narragansett Bay at Warwick and East Greenwich, Rhode Island, sheltered from the open bay and ringed by marinas, coves and residential shoreline. It holds striped bass, bluefish, scup, winter flounder and summer flounder, and its protection makes it a reliable option when the main bay is rough.

Stripers in the coves

Striped bass work the coves, the marina structure, the channel edges and the flats on moving water, taken on soft plastics, plugs, flies and live bait. Schoolie fish fill the bay through the season, with larger bass moving in at night and in low light. It is genuinely good kayak water given the shelter and the short runs.

Flounder, scup and bluefish

Winter flounder are taken in the cooler months in the deeper holes and channels, a traditional Rhode Island fishery that has declined but persists here. Scup fill the bottom through summer and provide easy action, and bluefish push in and turn the fishing fast and violent when they arrive.

Kent County logistics

Launches and marinas serve the bay at Warwick, East Greenwich and Apponaug, with shore access at Goddard Memorial State Park and town landings. Providence is twenty minutes north. The bay is shallow: watch the chart and the tide, particularly toward the back coves where it thins quickly.
