The migration channel

The Detroit River funnels Lake Erie's walleye horde toward St. Clair each spring: 28 miles of green international current that hosts what may be earth's densest walleye run. April's peak puts millions of fish under the fleet: handlining and jigging traditions built here now share water with modern electronics: the bite is the region's rite of spring.

Jigging the drift

The program: vertical jigs (3/4-1 oz, plastics or minnows) drifted at current speed along the channel edges: Trenton Channel, the Wyandotte flats, the mouth's humps. Boat control is the skill: slip the drift, stay vertical, feel the tick. Limits measured in hours define April: 8-10-lb fish salt every trip.

Beyond the run

Summer scatters walleye to Erie but the river keeps producing: smallmouth on every seawall and rock seam (a top-tier bronze fishery in its own right), muskies patrolling the weed edges (St. Clair's overflow), perch schools in the canals, and white bass runs that pile fish knee-deep in May. The river fishes twelve months: April just gets the headlines.

International water rules

The border runs mid-river: fish Michigan water on Michigan licenses, Ontario water on Ontario's: GPS discipline required, no landing on the far shore without clearance. Big-ship traffic owns the channel: yield always. Launches from Elizabeth Park to Erie Metropark ladder the U.S. side: winter's open-water jigging (the river rarely locks) extends the season for the hardy.
