How Michigan defines the river

Michigan's 2026 fishing regulations treat the Detroit River as a Great Lakes connecting water, running from a line due south of the Windmill Point Light in Wayne County to an east-west line through the southern tip of Celeron Island. Walleye are open all year there, with a 15-inch minimum.

The spring run

In a June 2026 release the DNR referred to the world-class Detroit River walleye runs and said catches that spring were average to slightly above average before, during and after the spawn. Its biologist noted that peak spawning usually comes when the water is around 45 degrees and that a cold spring can delay the run.

Limits are enforced

Conservation officers stepped up patrols in April and May 2026 and cited anglers in Wyandotte and north of Milliken State Park for keeping more than the daily limit. One cited angler admitted knowing that limits cannot be taken from both U.S. and Canadian waters.

Bass, sturgeon and muskellunge

Largemouth and smallmouth bass may be kept (14-inch minimum, 5 a day) from the third Saturday in June to December 31, and catch-and-immediate-release bass fishing is allowed all year.
