The strait of giants

The St. Clair River carries Lake Huron south in a blue, translucent rush: 40 miles of international current linking two of the world's best fisheries. Everything rides the conveyor: spring walleye by the million, the Great Lakes' healthiest lake sturgeon population, smallmouth that grew fat on gobies, and muskies ghosting the weed edges where the delta begins.

Working the current

The river fishes vertical and precise: jig the seams and holes for walleye (handlining survives here as local art), drift crawlers along the drop-offs for the mixed bag, and throw tubes to every break wall and dock for smallmouth that average what other waters call trophies. The North Channel and delta braids soften the flow for the muskie-and-bass casting game.

Sturgeon on purpose

The St. Clair system hosts one of North America's only legal sturgeon target fisheries: summer's anchored crawler-and-cut-bait soaks in the deep holes connect with 6-foot, century-old fish (season and release rules strict: check both nations'). Battling a dinosaur in translucent current is the river's signature memory.

Border water rules

The line runs mid-channel: Michigan license west, Ontario east, and the ship traffic owns the middle: freighters brake for no one. Access ladders the Michigan bank (Port Huron's boardwalk, Marysville, Algonac's delta ramps): shore casters do real business under the Blue Water Bridge. Winter never fully locks the current: the year-round bite is the river's quiet gift.
